“The Sassy Buck” Origin
Georgia is in my blood and bones. I grew up on 16 acres in Powder Springs surrounded by five generations of family, pine trees, and the soft smell of honey suckle and fresh cut grass from the fields that connected our family homes. About 15 years ago, we moved from our “farm” in Powder Springs to the suburbs of Kennesaw, and I’ve never been quite whole since.
So why "The Sassy Buck?" In elementary school, my sister nicknamed me "Sassy," and for some unlucky reason, it stuck. Growing up, my dad was nicknamed "Buck," though his name is Gary (because in the south, nicknames don't have to make sense.) I got my start in the handmade art world in my dad’s wood shop. He taught me everything I know about woodworking. The smell of sawdust is one of my earliest and crispest memories. And while my wood-working days are mostly over, he and I still occasionally work on projects together. As a matter of fact, he makes all of my wooden displays and the wood presses I use for my ceramic platters, spoon rests, and serving pieces.
And so “The Sassy Buck” came to be. A deep love of woodworking became a deeper love of pottery. The name is not just a fun, catchy title for a shop. It's memory. It's family. It's preposterously southern. It's me, y'all.
